LEVIATHAN “True Traitor, True Whore”

Release Date: November, 2011

Label: Profound Lore

I ain’t no psychoanalyst (and I’ll never be) but I doubt even one of them would be able to explain in a substantial manner only a part of what has been happening in Wrest’s inner self. Jeff Whitehead, after having been prosecuted (unfairly? no one knows) for the beating and sexual assault with tattoo tools against his former girlfriend, spent some serious time inside bar before released on bail –and we’re talking about American jails here, not Norwegian “hotels”. And now he’s back for yet another deposit of psychic darkness through the LEVIATHAN vessel.

With its title “True Traitor, True Whore” having an obvious receiver, Wrest keeps playing with words (“Whorror”, “Orifice”) and sounds (“Blood Red And True”) from the past, entangling them with today, depicting in a way the flash-backs and leaps of the human mind. His blackmetal sounds multi-collective, accepts small injections from macabre, almost darkwave synths (“Brought Up To This Bottom”) and at times adopts ambient, noise or even post-metal (“Contrary Pulse”) aesthetics, maybe influenced from its creator’s participation in the TWILIGHT project. It renounces part of its predecessor’s grandeur but remains absolutely misanthropic, targeted at highlighting a dark side that, as much as unwanted, exists inside each and every one of us.

To discuss about the deep drums or the bitterly narrative guitars or the haunting voice effects would have little or no meaning at all; here the essence lies on the “wholeness” of Wrest’s work. This “wholeness” will probably be much appreciated by those, already being spiritual companions in LEVIATHAN’s otherwise lonely trip. For the rest of you, those who prefer their BURZUM-like blackmetal amplified with various sonic ploys of technology, those who find shelter in the darker corners of the post-metal sound but above all those who feel in general the urban madness dangerously conquer them, here will find the record that closes year 2011 in a triumphant way.
