ILL OMEN “Divinity Through Un-creation”

Release Date: December, 2011

Label: Adverse Order

It has been some time since the shock that overwhelmed me when I first heard ILL OMEN’s “Spear Of Salvation” demo tape. For many years no one had achieved to produce such coldness and negativity, equal to what blackmetal exhaled back in the early nineties. Since then I heard of course the previous works (included in the “Compendium Maleficarum” collection) but nothing cold prepare me for what the debut full-length was meant to be.

Starting with a psalmody, “Divinity Through Un-creation” is the portal to the essence of the blackmetal sound. It creates a ritualistic, religious feeling but fortunately keeps a significant distance for being just another DEATHSPELL OMEGA clone. It honours the Norwegian roots of the genre, such as the spirituality of BURZUM or the grandeur of EMPEROR but is far more than a tribute paying band. With this release ILL OMEN claim their seat on the council of contemporary blackmetal bands with a distinct sound and personality. While vocals have evolved from shrieks, adding more depth to the landscape, it’s the guitars that produce a cyclic riffing which provides a feeling of constant descent.

There is no hope in ILL OMEN’s dimly lit underworld. Here reigns the darkness of mastermind IV, who has also given haunting death metal through his TEMPLE NIGHTSIDE vessel. Of those who dare to enter its realms, only few will survive. But they will hold the “Gnosis”…
