Amenti - Ψαλμοί Αίματος Και Αστρικά Οράματα“In Egyptian mythology, Duat (also Tuat and Tuaut or Akert, Amenthes, AMENTI, or Neter-khertet) is the underworld.”

Hail the Coven of ACHERONTAS! In the boiling pot of contemporary Hellenic, occult blackmetal, the band once named STUTTHOF has now taken for good the path towards Artistic Perfection. Every release steadily steps on top of the previous one, before elevating along with its creators to a higher level. In the newest of their creations, Acherontas V.Priest calls some companions with him; strong members of the scene such as Saevus H. of DEVATHORN, Scorpios Androctonous from the mighty CRIMSON MOON and the ubiquitus dummer Gionata Potenti. There are also exquisite guests like ARDITI, who contribute the intro and outro tracks as well as Naas Alcameth and Edgar Kerval who make vocal appearances. The outcome of this alliance? Well, nothing less than the fact that “AmentiΨαλμοί Αίματος και Αστρικά Οράματα is one of the most complete and breath-taking albums born in 2013.

The secret is for one to know where he comes from and where he wants to arrive. It is then that fear subsides, the gates open and inspiration flows in the most natural of ways. This is how one creates songs like Amenti – The Lamp Ov The Desert” where it’s the initial EMPEROR-like storm that first catches one’s attention, but the difference is made by the hidden eastern melodies that act underground and provide real depth to the music. On the other hand, in “The Stele Ov The Last Conjuration”, it’s those final seconds of the track that resemble a mass prayer, that cause an upheaval especially to listeners who have been raised in an orthodox country. (I’m saying this in the sense of the contradiction that arises when one hears a very familiar sound but within a totally different –if not opposite- context).

Geniusly doing so, the record continues with an 8-minute ritual epiclesis of “Nebt-Het”, a contribution from Scorpios. Eight minutes of such music is too much for hasty blackmetal fans, thirsting for non-stop blastbeat. Somewhere around this point they will give up and go on to pursue their next download, leaving the rest to continue on this journey to the underworld with the a-la NIGHTBRINGER tunes of “Set Triumphant – Nubti” serving as the finest of companions. And we are just about halfway, as “Amenti” is a full piece of art running at 60 minutes divided into 9 chapters (each one with its own subsections) where the active participation of the listener is required in order to become communicant to the mysteries buried inside. And this is the reason that Music is here inseparable from Ideology; so if any one decides to plunge into the waters of ACHERONTAS, they should make sure they have all the lyrics and texts that accompany this album. After all, Art should be seen as a whole and for one to read the word of the fantastic poem recited on top of the soul-lifting riffs heard in “Dissolution (In The Sands Of Time) – Νεκρόπολις is an experience totally mystic.

I remember, when “Theosis” was released, to enjoy moments of glory like “Legacy Of Tiamat”. Then in “Vamachara”, I admired a band that had found its own absolutely distinct path to spiritual perfection. By now, with the release of “Amenti”, I don’t really know what else I can say; only maybe that whilst it contains “less” blackmetal (in a narrow-minded sense) than one might have expected, it’s more substantial than most of the so-called dark records heard in recent years. Personally, I fantasize a concert totally set up on this music where the whole material of this album will be presented, from beginning to the end, and every individual that ciontributed will be there to play his part. Difficult to happen probably, but one cannot stop from hoping so…
